March 30, 2024 marked the 82nd anniversary of the day all 227 remaining residents of Japanese descent were rounded up and removed from their homes on Bainbridge. They were the first of what ultimately became the incarceration of more than 125,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast under Executive Order 9066 during WWII.
For those who missed the ceremony in person, below is a link to the program: “Teach the Children.” Natalie Sakuma, a 4th grade teacher from Skagit Valley, and granddaughter of Bainbridge Island survivor Satoru Sakuma, gave the keynote speech (begins at 27:40).
