Pritchard Park
4192 Eagle Harbor Drive NE
Bainbridge Island, WA 98110
(3.8 miles from the Winslow Ferry Terminal.)

Hours:

The Memorial is open every day from dawn until dusk.

Admission:

Free.

Pet Policy:

Dogs are allowed at the Exclusion Memorial, but they must remain on-leash and under close supervision at all times. Off-leash pets are strictly prohibited on the paths and in the parking lot. Please remember, the Memorial is both an artistic space featuring handcrafted wooden structures and a solemn tribute to the islanders whose lives were forever changed by their forced removal during WWII. We ask that you consider this when deciding to bring your pets to the site.

Interpretive Services:

As a National Historic Site, the Memorial is staffed by a seasonal National Park Service Ranger. Hours vary, but a ranger is generally on-site Thursday-Sunday from March through November.

An audio tour is also available through the National Park Service mobile app.

  1. Download the National Park Service app to your IOS or Android device, then search for “Klondike Gold Rush-Seattle Unit National Historical Park.”
  2. Click on the park, then select “Self-Guided Tours.”
  3. Finally, select “Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Audio Tour.”

The tour narrates 16 stops within the Memorial and takes approximately 1.5 hrs.

Guided Tours

Special arrangements can be made for a guided tour of the Memorial for student, community, family, and organizational groups whose educational interests and purposes align with BIJAEMA’s mission. Tours are hosted in collaboration with volunteer docents from the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC). Click below to submit a request. Please place your request at least 2 weeks in advance of your desired date. Tours are contingent on availability of docents and will be confirmed by follow-up email.

NPS Stamp and Jr. Ranger Program:

The official ink stamp for the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial National Historic Site is available for use when an NPS Ranger is on-site. Families with children and teachers can pick up copies of the official Jr. Ranger booklet from the NPS Ranger. A digital version of the Jr. Ranger booklet can be accessed here. Or, email [email protected] to request copies.

Transportation:

The Exclusion Memorial is most conveniently reached by car. The 3.7 mile trip from the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal to the Memorial is an 11-minute car ride. It is possible to bike to the Memorial, but the route is hilly, and some stretches do not have a bike lane.

Walking the route is strongly discouraged, as there are no sidewalks, and the trip from the Ferry Terminal takes 1.5 hours each way. Ground transportation on Bainbridge Island is limited, so plan ahead if you are arriving as a walk-on passenger on the Seattle/Bainbridge Island ferry. Transportation to the Bainbridge Island Exclusion Memorial may be arranged with 2 hours advance notice by contacting BI RIDE at 844-424-7433. Visit their website for current hours of operation. Note: BI RIDE does not currently operate on Sundays.

Parking:

The entrance from Eagle Harbor Drive is marked with a sign for the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial and Pritchard Park.  Upon entering the gravel driveway, keep to the left to arrive at the Memorial parking lot. Spaces are limited and overflow parking is available in the upper parking lot for Pritchard Park. Groups arriving by bus should enter at Taylor Ave, immediately preceding the turnoff for Pritchard Park, where there is a bus turnaround where passengers can unload and walk up a short path to reach the Memorial.

Accessibility:

The Exclusion Memorial is an outdoor memorial in a park-like setting. The grounds are ADA-compliant, but there are packed gravel paths throughout the Memorial, as well as some gentle slopes and wooden bridges that can become slippery when wet. Guests with walkers, wheelchairs, and other assistance aids are welcome but should take care to navigate the paths at a safe pace.

Facilities:

There is a porta-potty located in the parking lot. No running water or electricity are available on-site. Most visitors have good cell reception.
