SUMMARY:Healing Event: Stolen Sadako Statue
DESCRIPTION:Japanese American community unites for healing in the wake of stolen Sadako statue\nEvent takes a stand against the mutilation and theft of Peace Park statue (see KOMO News report on theft of Sadako Statue on July 19th\, 2024) \n11 a.m.–12 noon on Friday\, Aug. 2 \nSeattle Peace Park (851 NE 40th St.) \nSEATTLE – Members of the Japanese American community and allies—including University Friends Meeting\, a Quaker church—will come together for a healing event open to the public. The Aug. 2 event falls just three weeks after the mutilation and theft of the bronze Sadako Sasaki statue by the University Bridge.  \n“We will not stand for this act of vandalism—and possibly hate\,” said Stan Shikuma\, one of the healing event organizers. “The Japanese American\, Quaker\, and U District communities are in deep pain following this horrific act. We invite law enforcement and public officials to help us by restoring the statue and uplifting the park.” \nSadako Sasaki\, the inspiration for the statue\, was a young girl from Hiroshima who folded 1\,000 origami cranes and wished for peace before she died due to atomic bomb radiation. Sadako’s legacy—and cranes in general–are deeply sacred in Japanese culture.   \nThe one-hour event will include a brief ceremony\, speeches and performances. Attendees are invited to bring origami cranes as a way of honoring Sadako. All members of the public\, including those not present at the healing event\, are invited to share about the importance of the Sadako statue on social media with the hashtag #IStandWithSadako.   \nThe sponsoring organizations include the Japanese American Citizens League\, Tsuru for Solidarity\, Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee\, and From Hiroshima to Hope\, which are all dedicated to peace and/or social justice—and connected through historic aspects of the Japanese/Japanese American legacy. From Hiroshima to Hope for example hosts an annual event honoring victims of atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  \n“Today\, we must stand up for Sadako\, a real child who died from war and violence\, and whose story must never be forgotten. We stand up for this missing statue\, because Sadako’s story reminds us of the creative spirit and inherent value in all victims of war and violence\,” said Mary Hanson\, president of From Hiroshima to Hope.  \nThe event is also supported by University Friends Meeting\, a Quaker church–who was instrumental in placing the statue and developing the Peace Park before turning it over to Seattle Parks to administer and maintain.

SUMMARY:First Friday: Island Artist Chris Demarest
DESCRIPTION:The days are longer\, the flowers are blooming and we are planting our gardens…..all normal for May.  Our May artist\, Chris Demarest\, reminds us what is not normal with his exhibit titled NIDOTO NAI YONI: “Let It Not Happen Again”.  The exhibit will on display throughout the month of May. \nOpening Reception:Friday\, May 2\, 5:00–7:00 p.m.Library Meeting Room \nFrom the Artist: \n\nOn February 19\, 1942\, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the forceful removal of all Japanese Americans on the West Coast to concentration camps from California to Arkansas. Two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Here on Bainbridge Island\, 227 residents were taken from their homes. \nIn 2002\, a plaque was placed at the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial with the words: Nidoto Nai Yoni–“Let It Not Happen Again.” With the return of Donald J. Trump to the White House we are\, in fact\, seeing it happen again. \nThese portraits are a statement against the current administration’s attempt to erase our history; we will not forget the contributions of women and people of color in uniform. \nThis exhibit represents a collection of paintings done as part of my World War Two Portrait Tour (2011-2017).

SUMMARY:"Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066"
DESCRIPTION:Free Screening at Bainbridge Public Library\nJoin us for a special screening of Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066\, a powerful documentary that uncovers the false information and political pressures that led to the incarceration of more than 120\,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. The film reveals how government officials manipulated and suppressed key evidence\, resulting in Supreme Court rulings that upheld the mass exclusion and imprisonment. \nDecades later\, courageous attorneys used coram nobis petitions to bring hidden evidence to light and successfully vacate the wartime convictions of Fred Korematsu\, Gordon Hirabayashi\, and Minoru Yasui. Their victories exposed grave misconduct and restored justice to three American citizens who had resisted unconstitutional orders. \nMore than a history lesson\, Alternative Facts highlights how fear and prejudice can erode constitutional protections—and why vigilance in defending civil liberties is as vital today as it was then. \nThis free community screening is generously hosted by the Bainbridge Public Library in partnership with BIJAEMA. We especially encourage those planning to attend the Civil Liberties Symposium on October 5\, 2025\, to view the film in advance. It provides an excellent overview of the cases and history that will frame the Symposium discussion. All are welcome!

SUMMARY:Bainbridge Island Hosts the Ireichō
DESCRIPTION:***Reservations and waitlists for stamping the Ireichō in the Seattle area are now closed. Sign-ups are being accepted for volunteers who are interested in assisting the Ireichō staff during their stop in Bainbridge Island\, March 29-30. *** \nNational Monument for the WWII Japanese American Incarceration\nThe Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association is honored to have been selected as one of the host organizations for the Ireichō traveling tour. On March 29 and 30\, the Ireicho\, or Book of Names\, will be appropriately placed in the Sherry Grover Gallery\, home to the Artists’ Book Collection at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art\, where families will arrive for their pre-arranged appointments to stamp the names of WWII Japanese American incarcerees. \nAccording to the Ireizō Project\, the Irei: National Monument for the WWII Japanese American Incarceration is a multi-faceted project that seeks to address the attempted erasure of  individuals of Japanese ancestry who experienced wartime incarceration by memorializing their names. This is the first time a comprehensive list of the over 125\,000 persons of Japanese ancestry who were unjustly imprisoned in U.S. Army\, Department of Justice\, and War Relocation Authority (WRA) camps has been successfully compiled – and thus the first time it has been possible to properly memorialize each incarceree as a distinct individual instead of a generalized community. \nThe idea of a book as a monument is inspired by the Japanese tradition of Kakochō (literally\, “The Book of the Past”)\, a book of names typically placed on a Buddhist temple altar. This book is brought out for memorial services\, when the names of those to be remembered are chanted. Following a ceremonial installation on September 24\, 2022 at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM)\, the Ireichō monument was on display at the museum until December 2024. The public was invited to view and acknowledge the names in the Ireichō by placing a Japanese hanko (stamp) underneath the name of each individual in the book. \nBainbridge Island Helps to Honor Every Name in the Ireichō\nWith the two-year exhibit at JANM now concluded\, the Ireichō project has embarked on a national tour to the former War Relocation Authority camps\, Wartime Civil Control Authority assembly centers\, and Department of Justice internment camps. These stops coincide with community-organized pilgrimages to provide the opportunity for individuals across the nation to stamp names in the Ireichō and ensure that each person receives acknowledgment. \nWith expanded funding\, the national tour has spanned the nation — starting at the Smithsonian in Washington\, D.C. — and now includes four stops in the Seattle Area: the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art\, the Puyallup Remembrance Gallery\, the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple\, and the Blaine Memorial Methodist Church. Reservations for stamping appointments are now closed. \nInterested in volunteering to assist the Ireichō staff on March 29-30 in Bainbridge Island? Please send inquiries to info@bijaema.org.
