We are grateful that she selected the Memorial for a project that will benefit visitors for years to come. Wish her well as we honor this significant achievement.

DESCRIPTION:Honor the Tacomans of Japanese heritage who were forcibly relocated in 1942 to the concentration camp at Tule Lake under Executive Order 9066 \nEducators and the public at-large are invited to spend the afternoon commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the forced removal of Japanese Americans from Tacoma on May 16th\, 1942. This free event brings together art\, culture\, and education to showcase resources available from around the Puget Sound Area. \nVisit BIJAEMA as we host a table during the educational resource fair from 3:30-5:30p.m. at the Washington State History Museum.  See the schedule below. \n

Enjoy a nice lunch in Winslow\, then head over to the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art for a screening of Omoiyari. \nIn Omoiyari: a Songfilm by Kishi Bashi\, internationally acclaimed composer and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi (professionally know as “Kishi Bashi”) embarks on a personal quest by creating his music in locations relevant to the Japanese American Incarceration during WWII. It is on this journey in which Kishi Bashi comes to terms with his own identity\, and uncovers a myriad of social issues that have gripping modern relevance. Seating is limited.\nParking: On-site parking is reserved for survivors\, speakers\, and people with disabilities.\nShuttle: Off-site parking is located at Bethany Lutheran Church (7968 Finch Rd NE\, Bainbridge Island)\, where a shuttle will be available from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. to transport attendees to and from the memorial. \nProgram:\nThe Commemoration of the 82nd Anniversary of Forced Removal will be held on March 30th\, 11:00 a.m. at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. The theme of this year’s program is “Teach the Children\,” addressing the need for a new generation to share the stories of incarceration survivors. The keynote speaker is Natalie Sakuma\, who will talk about the legacy of her grandfather\, Satoru Sakuma\, who served in the decorated 442nd regimental combat team after his incarceration in Manzanar and Minidoka. Natalie is a fourth-generation Japanese American and a teacher in the Sedro-Woolley School District. \nOther speakers include:\nBarbara Lawrence of the Suquamish Tribe\nVal Tollefson\, board president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association\nClarence Moriwaki\, Bainbridge Island City Council member\nDrew Hansen\, Washington State Senator\nChasity Malatesta of the Multicultural Advisory Council\nMichele Bombardier\, with a reading of the poem “In Remembrance”\nKen Matsudaira and Taiga Araki\, with a reading of the 276 names on the Memorial Wall \nRelated Events:\n\nA complimentary post-event luncheon will be held immediately following the Commemoration ceremony in the 2nd floor classroom for Survivors and their families at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA)\, 550 Winslow Way W\, Bainbridge Island.\nA screening of the critically acclaimed film Omoiyari: A Song Film by Kishi Bashi will be held in the BIMA auditorium at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 for members\, $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:Join author Josh Tuininga at Eagle Harbor Books on January 11th at 6:30 p.m. for an evening of discussion about his new graphic novel\, We Are Not Strangers. \nMarco Calvo always knew his grandfather\, affectionately called Papoo\, was a good man. A first-generation Jewish immigrant\, Papoo was hardworking\, smart\, and caring. When Papoo peacefully passes away\, Marco is caught off guard by something unusual. Among his close family and friends are mourners he doesn’t recognize—Japanese American families—and no one is quite sure who they are or why they are at the service. How did these strangers know his grandfather so well? \nSet in the multicultural Central District of Seattle during World War II and inspired by author Josh Tuininga’s family experiences\, We Are Not Strangers explores a unique situation of Japanese and Jewish Americans living side by side in a country at war. Following Marco’s grandfather’s perspective\, we learn of his life as a Sephardic Jewish immigrant living in America and his struggles as he settles into an America gearing up its war efforts. Despite the war raging just outside US borders\, Papoo befriends Sam Akiyama\, a Japanese man who finds his world upended from President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066. Determined to keep Sam’s business afloat while he and his family are unjustly imprisoned\, he and Papoo create a plan that will change the Akiyama’s lives forever. \nAn evocative and beautifully illustrated historical fiction graphic novel\, We Are Not Strangers converges two perspectives into a single portrait of a community’s struggle with race\, responsibility\, and what it truly means to be an American. \nThis is at the invitation of the Kol Shalom community on Bainbridge Island. DESCRIPTION:Join the creators of the award-winning art installation on the Exclusion Memorial Departure Deck at this year’s Mochi Tsuki celebration. \nWho: Anna Brones and Luc Revel\nWhen: Saturday\, January 6th from 1:00-1:45 p.m.\nWhere: Woodward Middle School Gymnasium\nCost: FREE \nThe art installation has been nominated for the 2024 International Award for Public Art (IAPA) and has been appreciated by visitors to the Exclusion Memorial from around the globe. Anna and Luc will present background on how they arrived at the themes\, design\, and fabrication of their artwork and will take questions from the public. \nAdd a Free Taiko Performance \nSeattle Kokon Taiko will give two free performances at Mochi Tsuki\, at noon and 2 p.m. Each show will seat a maximum of 700 guests\, so grab a free ticket to reserve your spot when you arrive at Mochi Tsuki. If you attend the noon Taiko show\, stay seated in the gym for the Meet the Artists event immediately following. If you plan to attend the 2 p.m. Taiko show\, ensure yourself the best seating by attending the Meet the Artists event at 1 p.m. \nFor more than 30 years the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community has hosted Mochi Tsuki\, a festival to ring in the New Year. The public is welcome to celebrate by making mochi in the traditional way–steaming sweet rice over an open fire\, followed by pounding the rice by hand with traditional\, handcrafted cherry wood mallets (kine) in a granite bowl (usu). Visitors can get in on the action by trying their hands at pounding the mochi\, forming it into cakes by hand\, and eating it while it’s still warm and sticky! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Visit from U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer will be joining members of BIJAEMA and its partners to celebrate the awarding of the 2023 Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) Grant. The $613\,150 grant was the largest 2023 award granted by the JACS program\, which is administered by the National Park Service under the Department of the Interior. The award will be used for sitework and installation of utilities in the first phase of construction of the new Visitor Center. Representative Kilmer has been a long-time supporter of the Exclusion Memorial and was instrumental in highlighting the project during the appropriations process. \nAlso in attendance will be WA State Senator Christine Rolfes. Through her support and sponsorship\, BIJAEMA was awarded a $350\,000 Local Community Development grant earlier this year. \nParticipation in this event is by invitation only.
